Air Kaca ini dulunya salah satu tempat favorit Jenderal Douglas MacArthur, panglima tertinggi pasukan AS wilayah Asia Pasifik Barat pada masa Perang Dunia II. Ibaratnya, inilah kolam renang pribadi sang jenderal yang berasal dari mata air alami di bawah naungan pohon beringin. Untuk ke sini mudah saja, berkendara dari Bandara Pitu atau Bandara Leo Wattimena hanya 3-5 menit, jaraknya 1,8 km, sama-sama berada di daerah Wawama, Pulau Morotai, Maluku Utara.

Kabupaten Pulau Morotai yang berada di bagian utara Pulau Halmahera ini memang merupakan salah satu pulau terluar Indonesia yang menghadap langsung Samudera Pasifik. Posisi ini strategis sebagai basis pertahanan maupun pintu masuk pasukan Amerika, Sekutu maupun Jepang ke wilayah Indonesia, Malaysia maupun Filipina pada masa Perang Dunia II.

Jadi tak heran kalau banyak peninggalan perang di sini. Salah satunya ya Air Kaca, yang kini tentunya sudah dibuatkan tangga-tangga batu yang rapi untuk wisatawan turun hingga ke bibir air yang berupa celah atau gua air. Jadi nggak perlu menyeruak masuk belantara hutan, ataupun trekking belasan menit, apalagi bersusah-payah untuk melihat Air Kaca ini.

Dulu air ini nggak cuma dipakai buat mandi-mandi Jenderal MacArthur dan para perwira tingginya, tapi juga sebagai sumber air minum karena memang airnya jernih banget! Makanya dinamai Air Kaca. Tapi sekarang yang kita lihat sih udah nggak jernih-jernih amat.

Area di mana Air Kaca berada merupakan tanah pribadi seorang warga bernama Syukur Kaseku, dan ia juga yang sekaligus menjadi pengelola. Sampai terakhir MyTrip ke sana Oktober 2019, tidak diberlakukan tiket masuk. Kita hanya berikan donasi saja ke penjaganya.

Menurut cerita Muhlis Eso, pemandu lokal Morotai, sumber mata air alami yang muncul dari balik gua dan membentuk kolam ini awalnya ditemukan oleh penduduk asli Pulau Morotai yakni suku Moro. Tempat ini menjadi lokasi untuk semedi atau melakukan ritual tertentu. Lalu sejak tentara Jepang masuk Morotai, merekalah yang memanfaatkan sumber air ini. Lalu mereka membuat terowongan-terowongan dari dalam guanya. Aliran airnya sendiri konon tembus hingga ke Pulau Zumzum (salah satu pulau yang berada di pesisir barat Pulau Morotai, tak jauh dari Kota Daruba, ibu kota Kabupaten Morotai). Meski tembus hingga ke pulau lain, tapi airnya tawar. Dan, meski ketinggiannya berubah-ubah sesuai pasang surut air laut, tapi Air Kaca tak pernah kering.

Nah, setelah tentara Amerika mendarat dan menguasai Morotai sejak tahun 1944, tentara Jepang bersembunyi ke hutan-hutan, dan pasukan Amerika pun menemukan tempat ini, hingga menjadi salah satu tempat favorit MacArthur.

Cerita berbau mistis juga menyertai keberadaan Air Kaca ini. Ada yang bilang di sini ada penunggunya. Juga tak sedikit yang percaya air di sini membawa berkah, bisa menyembuhkan penyakit, bisa membuat yang susah dapat anak akhirnya punya anak. O ya bahkan dipercaya, dulu itu Jenderal MacArthur bisa meramal situasi perang dari air ini, entah bagaimana caranya tak ada cerita jelas.
